Quick Guide
Phillip Island Circuit is situated on the southern coast of Australia, near Melbourne. High on the cliffs overlooking the Bass Straight, Phillip Island is well known for windy, changeable conditions. It is also well liked among the riders, it’s combination of straights, corners and inclines rewarding riders for the effort they put in. In particular, Lukey Heights and the section of track from turns 8 to 10 are challenging, as is the long final turn into the home straight.
Always a feature of the first lap of any race at the Island is the war of nerves and guts that is the first corner on the first lap. Doohan Corner followed by the Southern Loop is a challenge on hot slicks, let alone in the madness of the first lap of a MotoGP race. Click through to the Google Map from the link above to see embedded video of Doohan Corner and also an onboard lap of the circuit from one of the instructors at the California Superbike School based at the circuit. This is MotoGPBlog’s favourite track on the calendar.
