Quick Guide
Motorcycle racing returned to Indianapolis in 2008. The first races ever held here were for motorcycles, in August 1909 a small matter of a week before the first car races. Racing has been a part of Indiana life ever since, and Wikipedia has an extensive entry on the subject.
The MotoGP track takes in two sections of the oval, mostly straights and including the famous “yard of bricks” over the start/finish line. A new section of track has been added from turns 1 - 4, and the remainder of the infield section uses the F1 circuit constructed in 1999. The major difference between the F1 and MotoGP tracks being that the bikes will run clockwise and the F1 cars ran anti-clockwise.
Those that have tested here state the track is tight, twisty and slow. Michelin in particular have complained about a lack of grip in T1, and the final sequence of fast left-handers will no doubt stress the rear grip to it’s limit.
Circuit length: 4.216 km
Circuit width: Wide, very wide in places.
Corners: 16: 10 left-handers, 6 right-handers
MotoGP race distance: 28 laps
