Rider Safety Lethargy

June 30th, 2007

In warm up on Friday, Tony Elias broke his leg after falling off and tumbling in a gravel trap. With this as a backdrop, it is scary to think that only two riders, Rossi and Capirossi, attend the Rider Safety Commission meetings regularly. Rossi spoke out earlier this week, sarcastically suggesting the other riders find it “difficult to stay every Friday after a long day to talk about kerbs, the track and its surface.”
With the amount of bitching that went on about Donnington’s surface, this is all the more concerning. Where are the younger riders who will step in once Rossi and Capirossi step down? The other members of the commission (Roberts Jr, Gibernau) are no longer attending meetings. Pedrosa is the only rider who regularly attends, according to Capirossi.
Less bitching and a more mature approach to improving track safety is required from the competitors. There is a forum for these complaints - best they start to use it instead of complaining to the press and taking no other action.

UPDATE

Vermeulen has responded to these claims by Rossi that nobody cares but him and Capirex. Apparently he’s not being invited to the party, and nor is Hayden. It seems being World Champ doesn’t buy you a seat with Race Direction!

Capirossi leaving Ducati?

June 30th, 2007

We start this blog fittingly with a post on the start of the silly season. Rider change rumours will now become rife as a significant portion of the riders get thrown up in the air to see which team they land on.

First up is Capirossi himself. His contract with Ducati expires at the end of the year, and his performances so far have been, well, less than stellar. His case is not helped by the massive step-change in Stoner’s performance in the championship. With Ducati saying nothing will be decided until after Laguna Seca, and Capirex making noises about an approach from the rejuvinated Kawasaki team, it looks like negotiations have started out in the open, and it could get quite nasty quite quickly.

We’ll be back with more as and when we hear it.
